Magic Overview
Mana, the energy linked to the Source of Creation, permeates every element that shapes the world. It exists within both the living and inanimate. Mana is elemental in nature and corresponds to the following elements:
Those who can harness and control Elemental Mana are capable of performing extraordinary feats, commonly known as Magic.
Nature of Mana and Elements
All matter is composed of the nine elements, either from one element or in various combinations. Each element comprises two parts: physical and non-physical.
The physical part of an element is what we are accustomed to, that which can be perceived by our five basic senses. The non-physical part, however, cannot be perceived by these senses and is referred to as Mana. Collectively, Mana within an element is known as Elemental Mana. But specifically, Mana within Fire element is known as Fire Mana, Mana within Life element is known as Life Mana and so on.
Unlike the fixed pattern or structure of its physical counterpart, Mana patterns are in a perpetual state of flux. Different Elemental Mana, such as Fire, Water or Life Mana, each possesses Mana patterns with different rhythm and intensity of change. Even within the same element, Mana patterns can vary across different types of material, sizes and other factors.
A notable distinction lies with the Spirit element, however, which exists only within sentient beings. Due to the lack of a physical part, Spirit element is itself Spirit Mana. Given the unique form of the Spirit element — pure energy in constant flux — Spirit Magic tends to be the most mysterious and mystical among the nine elements.
Spellcasting
Rule number one: You cannot conjure elements, you can only manipulate elements.
Rule number two: The bigger the source of elements, the more powerful the spell becomes.
Rule number three: You need a Conduit to do proper Magic.
These are the primary rules of the Laws of Magic. In addition, spellcasting in Elemana Chronicles follows a particular sequence: Perception, Attunement, Manipulation.
Mana Perception
To perceive Mana is to “feel” Mana.
Without a Conduit, one can only perceive and manipulate Elemental Mana within oneself, often limited to a few elements rather than all of them. As such, the Magic they can perform is rudimentary in nature, such as creating a spark with their body heat, healing minor wounds on themselves or slightly enhancing their own physical abilities.
A promising start nonetheless. These individuals are known as Mana users and are highly sought after for Magic initiation in various nations and civilisations, as they are uncommon to begin with.
Conduit
A Conduit can be viewed as a Mana Bridge. Conduits are usually Demigods or Ancient Beings that have existed since time immemorial, or Divine Beings such as Gods and Deities. Conduits possess immensely stronger ties to the Source of Creation compared to humans due to the nature of their mystical being and their seemingly timeless existence predating the Dawn of Mankind, granting them unparalleled command over Elemental Magic of their respective elemental domain.
If a Mana user is able to gain the Blessings of a Conduit, a Spirit Bond would be established between the Conduit and the Mana user, through which the Conduit bestows its power. This grants the Mana user the ability to perceive external Elemental Mana corresponding to the element of the Conduit.
This is illustrated below with a Pyromancer as an example:
The Pyromancer can then attune to and manipulate external Fire Mana to cast powerful Fire Spells.
Mana Attunement
The next part of the spellcasting process is Mana Attunement. To attune to Mana is to create a “Mana-link”.
Using the previous example, to attune to Fire Mana is to synchronise Fire Mana patterns within the Pyromancer with those within the fire source. Once synchronized, a Mana-link is established between the two, allowing the spellcasting process to proceed to its third step. The same principle applies to all other elements.
Mana Manipulation
When a Mana-link is established, it allows the Mana user to channel Elemental Mana from within to the source of element. The Mana user can then manipulate the Elemental Mana within the source according to the Magic Schema of a particular spell. A Magic Schema can be understood as the “recipe” of a spell, detailing the Mana cost and the steps to “mould” Mana into the required form. Naturally, more advanced spells would involve more complex Magic Schemas and demand greater Mana reserves.
Spellcasting Summary
To better illustrate the spellcasting process, let's use Frost Spike as an example:
By manipulating Water Mana, the Hydromancer transforms the water in the flask into a Frost Spike, altering its physical state, form, motion and even volume to a certain extent.
And thus concludes the core principles of spellcasting in the world of Elemana Chronicles.
